Sustainability

The University reduced its total amount of CO2 emissions by 18 percent per full-time equivalent/FTE during 2018-2021

The 2030 goal is to reduce the climate footprint (scope 1-3) by 50 percent per FTE compared with 2018.

To calculate the total climate footprint, UCPH follows the internationally recognised and widely used approach, the Greenhouse Gas Protocol, which divides CO2 emissions into three categories (scopes):

Scope 1: Direct emissions from fuel, etc.

Scope 2: Electricity, district heating and remote cooling consumption

Scope 3: Other emissions, including from the procurement of goods, services, travels, etc., regardless of where in the world the emissions occur. These accounted for approx. 85 percent of the climate footprint in 2018.

With the 2030 target and the calculation of the total climate footprint, including scope 3, UCPH has set a challenging but more accurate goal for all the emissions for which UCPH is responsible.

Energy and climate actions since 2008

UCPH has been working with sustainability since 2008 and has had several generations of goals during that time. In 2014, the University introduced 'Green Campus 2020' with a climate goal of ‘Reducing CO2 emissions from energy consumption and transportation by 65 percent per FTE compared to 2006’

In 2019, UCPH reached a 71 percent reduction against 2006, thus delivering the Green Campus 2020 climate goal.

The diagram shows CO2 emissions per FTE from 2006 to 2019.
